Re: 1859 question/population

For most of the time I’ve known this obverse my designation for it has been the “lightning bolt” obverse. More recently it has been assigned the more formal designation of o32 in my developing catalog of the 1859 dies being published serially in Numismatica Canada. In my research this die has eight states and is associated with some six reverse dies so far. Two of the six, as Bill has noted, are dies with re-punched 9s. Bill’s “tool mark”, aka Rob’s “die chip” doesn’t appear until near the end of the life of o32, specifically in State 8. In that state o32 is linked to only one of the six reverses. The feature in question does seem to have “straight” sides, which makes one hesitate before writing it off as a simple die chip. It’s hard to decide, so I’ll have to pull out a trusty daisy on this one---tool mark, die chip, tool mark, die chip, tool mark, die chip! So my vote is die chip. That last daisy petal has a little message underneath that reads, “The die was hard and to use a hand punch on it would have risked the punch and the die. And the Mint would not have risked (or gone to the trouble of) annealing a well-worn die that had already lasted much longer than most. Also, why try to repair only one of several cracks?” Whatever it is, thanks for sharing, Bill!!
