Re: Die Deterioration or Doubling?

Die Detioration Doubling is caused by extensive Die Usage that causes the sharp edges to the letters or numbers on the Die to 'deteriorate' and round off. Peeled Chrome Plating, although a form of Die Deterioration, is considered a different failure mechanism but is also caused by extensive Die usage. Die Deterioration Doubling has been around as long as there have been mechanical punches, while Peeled Chrome Plating (chipping off of the plating) started around 1943 when the Mint started chrome plating Dies for the different denominations to extend Die life. I have some Tombac nickles that have the symptoms of P.C.P. .
