Re: Please hone your grading and pricing skills...

Your pricing question is an interesting one. Older Canadian specimens don't seem to price up well unless they are ultra high-grade, and pretty. Some of the Heaton hoard specimens fall into that category, but the early RCM sets (1908 and 1911) certainly don't. There seems to be a fair bit of supply, and the sets are all affected by that ultra-dark toning, or are dipped gray. Either way, they don't show PQ.

And then there's the collectibility/demand factor. People seem to collect date sets in these series (I certainly do), and thus there is more demand for the MS coins. In Edward specimens, there is the 08 sets (like your coin), the 3 coin 1902H sets (I'm aware of a total of 3 complete sets, all in high-grade (I own one of them), plus a part set), and a single, as far as I know, part set of 1905. Hard to collect a series of these; thus I think less demand.

But compare the pricing on this stuff with the Australian market, where specimen Florins (about the size of our halves) command a premium over MS of something like 10 times in similar grades! Go figure, except that you can actually do date sets of Australian specimens if you have the wallet for it.
