Re: a question for AussiBob

I went back and looked, and 5 Cents asked another question that I should have tried to answer. I`m not sure I can, but let me try. I think that convention says that dipping isn`t cleaning, and dipping isn`t wear. Dipping on it`s own may change the molecular chemistry of the surface of the coin, but it certainly doesn`t ``wear`` it. Cleaning and wear result in alterations to the surface of the coin that can be detected under 5 power magnification, which is what graders tell us is the proper amount of magnification for good grading. The dipping debate will, I`m sure, rage for ever; is it good, ever good, or just plain bad. We had a really good, after a couple of beers, discussion of just that at Torex last weekend. I`d say that probably 75% of all pre-George VI Canadian coins have been dipped at some time, and a lot of them have very nice retoning now (the Australian numbers would be considerably higher, I think). But I`d be shocked if we ever concluded that dipped coins were cleaned, or worn simply because of the dipping
