During the 80's, My wife and I owned a corner convenience store, with a VHS rental counter. For 4-5 years, we had almost daily visitor we let hang around, starting when he was about 13. He was mute and had two hearing aids to be able to hear a bit. Not just 5 minute customer-visits, but the hang-around-for-hours, play-video-games, check-all-the-movie-boxes, put-a-couple-of-cases-of-Coke-in-the-fridge-for-me visits. (had some other regulars who could hang around also - no swearing, no yelling). His home away from home during the day (he didn't go to regular school).
So when I say, "couldn't say anything", it's not figurative, it's literal. He could make some sounds but over several years, he never actually said a clear distinct word.
