Griffin Legacy?

Maybe the title is too dramatic but I have a nagging doubt that does not want to go away. A relevant piece of information I put on my 2x2 is the Griffin number and this activity keeps me busy/drives me mad most of the time. However it is, I beleive, an important information for a victorian coin. It would be nice to have all of the victorian coin entries with a picture in the monograph 1.

I think it was mentioned on this site that some of Mr. Griffin research material was being auctioned off by an auction house (Jeffrey Hoardes if I do not mistake). Was a picture of the coins taken before letting them go? If pictures were not taken, we have lost an important source of numismatic information.

How would we know the difference between a Gr-29 and 29a? Would a Griffin number still be relevant?
