Re: 1859 DP N9 #1 ICCS Certified EF40

Yes, the DP N9 #1 is a single reverse die coupled with a single obverse with the markers mentioned previously. However, my finding, time after time, has been that any given die first exists in an uncracked (or at least microscopically cracked) state. Thus, there are very likely rare pieces that have either the obverse, the reverse or both uncracked. What the 9 looked like when the die was uncracked is a big question. The basis of the DP N9 #1 conformation is undoubtedly a repunched 9, but there seems to be more going on than a simple repunching offset and in its earliest state the 9 may or may not look the same as it appeared later. The bottom line is that the die cracks are useful markers, but their presence might not always be an absolute criterion.

Finally, the possibility cannot be ruled out that another obverse was also used with this reverse. More often than not, obverse and reverse dies were not retired simultaneously. Typically, any given die was run as long as it would go. There are a few cases of 1859s struck with very worn dies, indeed, run far longer than they should have been for the sake of appearance.
