Re: Your grading skills ...... here are the reverse Images 1858 20 cent and 1875H 10 cents

I've opened my mouth on a topic I usually don't get involved in, so I'll say a bit more before going back to work to finish getting the monkey off my back...As far as I'm concerned the reverse photos are entirely consistent with the obverse grades: EF for the 10c and AU for the 20c (but remember that I so far am the only one so far to say AU). And from the pictures, the 10c looks genuine to me. But that 20c is a big question mark. The detail looks OK in the pictures, but I'd want to see the coin under a microscope before making a final decision. Its nasty color is more than a little disconcerting. On that score alone my suggestion would be to avoid it. Believe me, you'll find a prettier one to spend your money on.

Now, about the grading of the 10c. The rule of thumb is that unusual damage does not affect the grade, only the price. That isn't to say that reducing the grade due to damage isn't widespread, but I still say it violates the basic tenets of grading. Are those scratches below the N bad enough to merit a price reduction? I, for one, think they are when on an otherwise EF coin. Maybe some others can suggest by how much.
