Re: 1936 question?
Sigh!! 1936 specimen sets are extremely rare. They come with the cent, dime and quarter all as dot coins, and the rest of the set as regular 1936 (5, 50 and dollar). Aside from these coins, there are also 1936 dollar specimens, because, I think, of their one year type, but these coins are a bit different looking than the ones in the 1936 sets (if you observe keenly, they are just a bit different). Pittman had a single set when he died. It went to a dealer in St. Louis, and then to Belzberg, where the set was split up. It's now been reassembled, but now with the dime from the second set. The second set was split up in the early 80's, with the dime and the impaired cent going back to Pittman, and then the dime sold in the first Pittman sale, and the penny in the third Pittman sale. The quarter (dot) from this set has been around the collecting community for quite a while, and the 5, 50 and dollar have been together in a collection for more than 30 years, until recently.
Are you suggesting that these sets weren't made in the mint, or that the extra pieces (a single penny, two dimes in the Bank of Canada's collection, and a third that came from LaFortune's holdings about 15 years ago, NO quarters) were somehow made somewhere else? How do the dimes get to the bank of Canada collection, on permanent loan from the mint, if they didn't come from the mint?
BTW, note that the rarest of all these coins is actually the specimen dot quarter! Two known.
