Re: 1921 5 cent question

Hi folks! As a coin collector for quite some time I have learned a few lessons along the way, some of them were learned the hard, expensive way believe me! I am no expert but here is how I approach things. First you need patience, if you really want a '21 5 cent then be prepared to wait for the right one. One of the best ways to obtain scarce coins is at a coin auction. About 5 years ago I bought a ICCS F12 '21 5 cent for exactly $500 less then trends value. This included buyers fees and taxes. The coin market at that time was a little hotter then it is now I believe. Fair deals can be had at auctions almost always. That's why the majority of bidders are usually dealers. The upcoming RCNA auction in Calgary has 4 1921' s up for grabs starting with a decent VG 8. Two rules that a very well known and respected coin dealer here in Canada told me after a few years of dealing with him were this: 1) Never buy a damaged coin. 2) Never pay trends. With the exception being an extremely rare coin where there are very few known. I have followed these rules and with patience they have served me well. I have never paid more than 50- 80% of trends for any coin and I have bought some very scarce and rare coins including a small crown 25 cent from a dealer that has come to know me as a good and easy to deal with customer. Be patient and any coin you are looking for will come at the right price. Get to know your dealers and get involved with auctions! My humble 2 cents worth!
