Re: What’s the difference between legal tender and spending money? A big headache for a Scarborough man

Hello Mr. XXXX XXXX,

Thank you for contacting the Royal Canadian Mint. With regards to your inquiry, please note that the 20$ for 20$ are indeeed exchangable at banks for Can$. If a bank doesn't accept it, please give them our toll free number 1-800-267-1871, and we will be happy to help them. All our coins are legal tender. It is also possible to exchange them in canadian shops, except all those shops are private and it's at their own discretion if they want to accept it or not. Your best bet would be a bank.

For any further inquiries, please do not hesitate to contact us at www.mint.ca/contactus or by phone at 1-800- 267-1871 (Canada), 1-800-268-6468 (US) or at 613-954-2626 (International). Our hours of operation are 8 am to 8 pm (Monday to Friday). Your interest in our products is appreciated and we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. Please accept our apologies for the delay in responding. Sincerely, XXXX XXXX Customer Service Representative/Représentant du service à la clientèle Royal Canadian Mint/Monnaie royale canadienne
