Re: Why I collect? - "Variety is the spice of life!"
I started collecting coins from a very young age. My mother took me to coin shows often in downtown Toronto in the early 1970s. There were always coins and numismatic journals in our house. After completing Canadian 1 cent and 5 cent collections in low grades, (minus the key dates, because I could never afford them), she convinced me at the age of about 11 or 12 to try and build a Canadian Type set. Using money from my job as a Toronto Star Newspaper Delivery Boy in downtown Toronto I was almost able to complete one.
As I grew more knowledgeable in Numismatics she always impressed on me to buy the best grades I could afford. She introduced me to many numismatists and exposed me to a wide variety of coins. This instilled in me a respect and appreciation for the hobby and diversification at such a very young age. I feel that this upbringing has led me to a very practical and eclectic approach to collecting in my adult life.
Nowadays I collect coins that appeal to me for a variety of reasons. They may have historical or cultural references that appeal to me. They may just simply look beautiful to me. I always look at coins as small pieces of art. They are always teaching me things. Variety is the spice of life!
