- NATIONAL CURRENCY COLLECTION
- - Located at the Bank of Canada in Ottawa. Contains a major collection of Canadian
coinage and currency and is open to the public.
- NECESSITY MONEY
- - Money issued usually locally, often under ad-hoc authorization to meet an emergency
such as a siege, a breakdown of central authority or an absence of regular money.
- NEW-DIE PROOFS
- - First coins struck of working dies. Not proofs. See also First Strike.
- NICK
- - A small mark on a coin caused by another coin bumping against it or by contact with a
rough or sharp object.
- NICKEL
- - A nearly silver-white hard malleable metallic element commonly used in combination
with other metals for coinage. Also a reference to a US and Canadian five-cent piece.
- NON-CIRCULATING LEGAL TENDER
- - These issues fall outside the customary definitions of circulating legal tender but
were created and marketed by or under the authorization of a government for collector
purposes. They are generally released at prices substantially in excess of their face
values and often do not have counterparts in the same base metal as those released for
circulation, eg. the silver dollars or Canada dating from 1971.
- NON-COMPETITIVE COIN
- - Usually a reference to a coin that is of such high quality that there is very little
likelihood of an equal or better quality coin appearing on the market at any price level.
Such coins command substantial premiums with may quality oriented collectors.
- NON-DIE VARIETY
- - A variety of coin (from the standard) by virtue of a deliberate change (non-die
related) in planchet composition or thickness. See also Variety and Die Variety.
- NOTGELD
- - Emergency money. Usually that issued by Germany during the World War I emergency
including coins and paper money.
- NUMISMATIC FINE ART
- - Reference to any numismatic item (coin, token, etc.) that resembles fine art as judged
by its aesthetic appeal, design, near flawless uncirculated quality, and complemented by
superbly attractive toning.
- NUMISMATICS
- - The systematic collection and study of coins, tokens, and medals. It also was widened
to include paper money.
- NUMISMATIST
- - A person knowledgeable in numismatics.
